The History and Recipe of Seswaa: Botswana's Traditional Meat Dish.

Updated: Mar 28

Seswaa, a mouthwatering traditional meat dish from Botswana, holds a significant place in the country's culinary history. Its origins can be traced back to the hunting practices of the indigenous people, who would preserve meat by drying and shredding it. Today, Seswaa remains a beloved delicacy, enjoyed at special occasions and gatherings.

To prepare Seswaa, you'll need the following ingredients:

- 1 kg beef brisket (or goat meat)

- 1 onion, chopped

- 2 cloves garlic, minced

- 1 teaspoon ground cumin

- 1 teaspoon ground coriander

- 1 teaspoon salt

- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

- Water

Instructions:

1. Cut the beef into small pieces and place in a large pot.

2. Add the onion, garlic, cumin, coriander, salt, and pepper to the pot.

3. Pour in enough water to cover the meat.

4. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 2-3 hours, or until the meat is tender.

5. Remove the meat from the pot and shred it using two forks or a meat shredder.

6. Return the shredded meat to the pot and simmer for another 30 minutes, or until the liquid has reduced and the meat is slightly crispy.

Seswaa is typically served with pap (maize porridge) or sorghum porridge, and can also be used as a filling for sandwiches or wraps.
