Updated: Mar 28

If you're a fan of fried doughnuts and are looking to try something new and exciting, then you're in for a treat with Magwinya! These delicious and crunchy deep-fried doughnuts are a popular street food in many African countries, and for good reason. The combination of a crispy exterior and a soft, fluffy interior is simply irresistible. In this step-by-step guide, we'll take you through the process of making your own Magwinya at home.

Ingredients:

- 2 cups all-purpose flour

- 1/4 cup sugar

- 1 tsp baking powder

- 1/2 tsp salt

- 1/4 tsp nutmeg

- 1/4 tsp cinnamon

- 1/4 cup melted butter

- 1/2 cup warm milk

- 1 egg

- Oil for frying

- Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions :

1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, nutmeg, and cinnamon.

2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the melted butter, warm milk, and egg.

3. Gradually pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until a soft dough forms.

4. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for a few minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.

5. Place the dough back into the mixing bowl and cover with a clean cloth. Let it rest for 30 minutes.

6. After 30 minutes, heat the oil in a deep fryer or a heavy-bottomed pot to 375°F.

7. Roll out the dough into a thin sheet and cut into small circles using a cookie cutter or a round lid.

8. Gently drop a few dough circles into the hot oil and fry for 1-2 minutes on each side until they turn golden brown.

9. Remove the doughnuts from the oil using a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to absorb excess oil.

10. Once all the doughnuts are fried, dust them with powdered sugar while they're still warm.

Your delicious Magwinya are now ready to be enjoyed! Serve them warm with a cup of tea or coffee for a perfect snack or dessert. Don't be afraid to experiment with different toppings like chocolate sauce or fruit preserves.
