Updated: Mar 28

Are you tired of buying store-bought bread and craving for a homemade, fluffy and delicious dombolo (steam bread)? Look no further! In this step-by-step guide, I will share with you the recipe and ingredients needed to make this traditional South African bread at home.

Ingredients:

- 4 cups of all-purpose flour

- 1 tablespoon of sugar

- 1 and ½ teaspoons of instant yeast

- 1 teaspoon of salt

- 1 cup of warm water

- 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil

- 1 tablespoon of vinegar

Instructions :

Step 1: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Mix well until all the dry ingredients are evenly distributed.

Step 2: In a separate small bowl, mix the warm water, vegetable oil, and vinegar together.

Step 3: Slowly pour the wet mixture into the dry mixture and mix with a wooden spoon until a soft dough forms.

Step 4: Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.

Step 5: Place the dough back in the mixing bowl and cover it with a clean kitchen towel. Let it rest for about 30 minutes in a warm place until it doubles in size.

Step 6: After 30 minutes, punch down the dough to release any air bubbles and knead it again for a few minutes.

Step 7: Divide the dough into equal-sized balls, depending on how big you want your dombolo to be.

Step 8: Place the dough balls onto a greased steamer tray, leaving some space between each ball as they will expand during steaming.

Step 9: Cover the steamer tray with a kitchen towel and let the dough rise for another 15 minutes.

Step 10: Once the dough has risen, steam the dombolo for about 20-25 minutes until they are fully cooked and fluffy.

Step 11: Remove the dombolo from the steamer and let them cool for a few minutes before serving.

Congratulations! You have successfully made fluffy and delicious dombolo at home. Serve them warm with your favorite stews or soups for a complete meal.
